Beware: How I almost got scammed shopping online in the UK!

Beware Girls, I almost fell into the scam of a website imitating Miss Selfridge and I hope you will never fall prey to such a scheme.

These are some of the fraud websites that I am aware of:

As I have just arrived in the UK a month ago, I was not very familiar with the latest developments of many high-street brands such as Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse, Topshop, and Miss Selfridge. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which led to a decrease in footfalls in retail shops, they have been bought over by other companies and had all ceased operations for their physical stores.

Therefore, it created an opportunity for scammers to imitate the entire website of Miss Selfridge which I almost fell into it.

As I was lucky to make my first online purchase in the UK from Dorothy Perkins in January 2022 which is a legitimate website that honors the sales transactions and return policy, I was emboldened to start shopping online in the UK.

Therefore, I was less guarded when I was scrolling through https://ukmissselfridge.com and happily taking screenshots of all the dresses that I like with their “FANTASTIC” Price point.

While there were some red flags that should have alerted me earlier, I was too blinded by the low price point that I came up with reasons to justify the red flags. For instance, the website proclaimed that there was a sale, however, I could not find any items that was labelled sale except that everything was really cheap. Therefore, I hypothesise that the company is trying a new sale tactic to not reveal the before and after prices for the sale item.

I only started becoming suspicious that this could be a scam website when I saw ? In the description of the products which I thought was very unprofessional. Thereafter, I headed to the UK trust pilot which confirmed my suspicions.

I was really lucky that I became suspicious before I placed my order. I am also very thankful that these people shared their experiences on the peer review site, Trust pilot,  so that we are warned.

The website, https://ukmissselfridge.com , has since been taken down from google but I am pretty sure that the perpetrator can easily create other domain names to lure other victims.

Therefore, I think it is important that we share our experiences with everyone so that we could help to protect our online shopping experiences from fraud and continue to enjoy the cost efficiencies as customers and retailers.

I will continue to update this post if I notice that the scammer is back with other similar fake websites. If you have a similar experience, please let us know in the comments section below and we will be happy to put the links on the website.
