The Selection (反乌托邦世界) 五颗星
The Selection (Dystopia) 5 Stars
The story foretells a future world in which the modern day America transforms from a democratic society into a monarchy, known as the state of Illea.
The story follows the main character’s life, a girl named America. In the monarchy, there is a caste system. The main character, America, belongs to the musician caste which is considered a lower caste in the system. America has a big family. Her family members have to work to survive. Sometimes, they do not get enough food and access to good healthcare.
There is a curfew in Illea as there are rebels trying to overthrow the monarchy state. The rebels want to get rid of the caste system and the royal family. The frequent rebel attacks make the lives of the people worse off.
America is recruited to be part of the selection of the next queen. The prince will pick the queen from a pool of 35 girls. She outshines all the girls with her talents and composure and is selected by the prince to be his wife eventually.
I like this book the most because the story is dramatic. The story explores many concepts, some of which I can’t really understand yet. I think I may have to reread this book in the future to better understand the nuances of the story.
